Alyssia Jovellanos: From career wish doctor to computer scientist

23. Oktober 2016
Name: Alyssia Jovellanos
Position: Winner of the Student of Vision ABIE Award 2016
Thema: Female role models in computer science

From a girl who wanted to be a doctor to an award winning computer scientist and role model.

This is the story of Alyssia Jovellanos, winner of the “Student of Vision” Award from the Anita Borg Institute in 2016.

“When I was in high school, I knew nothing” she says. Her parents wanted her to become a doctor as it is a safe job and she was good in natural sciences and math.

Just accidentally, she got to know a girl her brother dated back then. The girl studied computer science and was a software engineer. Alyssia took the opportunity and asked a lot of questions about her profession. Inspired, Alyssia decided (after some “googling”) to study computer science.

Today she is a role model. She tells her story and encourages other women with a similar background to get a look into this field. Especially she enjoys the work with kids and computers as they have a lot of energy and she can give them new opportunities.

According to Alyssia, one has to be patient and like to interact with kids in the first place to do such work.
